Abstract

Gov. McKernan said that should U.S. Senator George J. Mitchell be appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court before he completes his current term the winner of the race to succeed him in the Senate will be appointed to fill out the term. McKernan's wife, U.S. represenative Olympia J. Snowe, is the Republican candidate for Mitchell's seat, and McKernan said it would be improper for him to appoint her to Mitchell's seat if Mitchell were to vacate it before the November election.
