Abstract

Converting the Maine Turnpike to an electronic toll collection system will result in a reduction of the number of toll takers from 325 to 185, with necessary layoffs to occur after December 1995. An electronic toll system will give the Turnpike Authority the flexibility to institute a variable pricing system that could allow for higher tolls during peak hours or on weekends. Details.
