Abstract

Container cargo shipments through Portland for March 1994 totaled 257, double the 128 containers that came through the port in March 1993. The increase is due primarily to an agreement between the Hapag-Lloyd American Inc. cargo company and three South American shipping companies that resulted in containers of seaweed being shipped directly from Chile to Portland, instead of from Chile to New York as was previously the case. The seaweed, which is processed by FMC Corp. of Rockland, is currently the only product that comes directly from South America, but that could change in the future. Details.
