Abstract

Unum Corp. on Monday released an earnings report that showed a first-quarter operating profit rise that was about 10 percent short of expectations on Wall Street, precipitating a sell-off of Unum stock on Tuesday. The decrease in earnings is attributed to problems in the field of long-term disability insurance, Unum's core business. Investment analysts yesterday expressed confidence in the company despite the sell-off, but reserved judgment on whether the problems are long term or a passing phenomenon. Details.
