Abstract

Maine State Police are experimenting with the use of spiked rubber mats as a way of avoiding high-speed motor vehicle chases. The spikes puncture the tires, become embedded in them, and provide a steady but controlled deflation that does not interfere with steering. A vehicle can be immobilized within 15 minutes, depending on its speed and the condition of its tires. The mats are being carried by supervisors on the Maine Turnpike but they have not yet been used in actual situations.
