Abstract

The Conservation Law Foundation and Apogee Research Inc. of Bethesda, Md., yesterday released a study that shows it costs between 67 and 74 cents per mile to drive alone in Portland, as compared to 12 cents per mile for bicycling and 14 cents per mile for walking. The study, which looked at the Portland and Boston metropolitan areas, factors in costs for environmental damage from car exhaust, highway repairs and tax breaks to oil companies. Details.
