Abstract

The Conservation Law Foundation, Trout Unlimited, American Rivers, the American Whitewater Federation and the federal Environmental Protection Agency yesterday criticized the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's decision to approve 30-year renewals for seven hydroelectric dams on the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire. The dams power the James River paper mill in Berlin, and are owned by a James River affiliate and Public Service Company of New Hampshire. The environmental groups said the dams should be allowed to operate, but must be required to do something about pollution, fishing, boating and wildlife.
