Abstract

A new Canadian law that allows the country to seize foreign fishing vessels beyond the 200-mile limit should not affect Maine fishermen because they generally do not fish in the area in question. The law is aimed at non-Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization vessels that have been fishing the Grand Banks fishing ground, which is to the east and southeast of Newfoundland and just outside the 200-mile zone.
