Abstract

The Spring Point Museum in South Portland on Saturday opened a special exhibit called "Bridges over the River," which celebrates the various bridges that have spanned the Fore River over the last 200 years. The display comes as construction begins on the new $165 million Portland-South Portland Bridge, scheduled to open in 1997. The first bridge linking Portland and South Portland, which was then part of Cape Elizabeth, was built in 1800 by William Vauhgan, a businessman who owned a large tract of land in Portland's West End.
