Abstract

The SS Jeremiah O'Brien, currently visiting Portland before returning to its home port of San Francisco, is powered by a 2,500-horsepower marine steam engine whose design was perfected in 1876 by the Northeastern Engine Co. in Sunderland, England. The ship's top speed is 11 knots, and while cruising at that speed the ship consumes 165 barrels of fuel oil in a 24-hour period. The engine itself is 20 feet tall and 12 feet wide, and will be fired up today as the O'Brien cruises around Casco Bay. Details.
