Abstract

While the number of state and federal prisoners nationwide climbed to a record 948,881 in 1993, Maine's prison population has declined by 200 over the past two years. Maine experienced growth in its prison population between 1981 and 1991, with the number of inmates doubling from 850 to 1,700, but that trend has reversed since 1992. Details, related article.
