Abstract

While there is a trend toward greater conservatism among Republicans nationally, the opposite is happening in Maine, where moderates have become more of a force in the state GOP party. Recent attacks against Republican gubernatorial candidate Susan M. Collins, a moderate, by the conservative wing of the Maine GOP are seen by some political observers as evidence of the isolation of the right wing, not its emergence as a major force in the party. Recent events show that the conservatives remain a factor in Maine GOP politics, but they are seen as a minority. Details.
