Abstract

Ed Langlois, who is the president of the South Portland Shipyard Society and is spearheading efforts to bring the S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien to Portland, said that he is overwhelmed by offers of those willing to help with money, goods, or services in order to bring the last seaworthy Liberty ship to Portland for a visit. The O'Brien was one of 236 Liberty ships built in South Portland during World War II and its operators say that $100,000 in cash and in-kind contributions are needed to bring the ship here for a port call. The O'Brien, one of about 2,700 such ships built at 18 shipyard nationwide, is also the only surviving seaworthy ship from the D-Day invasion.
