Abstract
The U.S. Navy's repeated delay in awarding three new Aegis destroyer contracts is causing concern among many of the younger workers at Bath Iron Works, who for the most part were hired during the shipbuilder's massive buildup during the 1980s. The Aegis contracts are worth $250 million each, and BIW needs two new destroyer contracts a year to maintain its current workforce of 8,900. BIW already has contracts to build 11 of the ships through 1998. Details.
