Abstract

The U.S. Navy on Wednesday announced that instead of awarding the contracts for Aegis destroyers based on bid figures it will evenly divide the 1994 and 1995 contracts between Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding of Mississippi and allow the price to be set by negotiation. The U.S. Department of Defense seems increasingly willing to spend more money in exchange for maintaining the health of defense contractors it may need in the future. The Navy's decision will give BIW through 1995 to concentrate on making itself more competitive. Details.
