Abstract

The U.S. Navy today will commission the USS John S. McCain, an $800 million, 505-foot-long Aegis destroyer that took Bath Iron Works four years to build. The Aegis program, one of the longest running programs in Navy history, currently represents 60 percent of the Navy's spending. The cruiser's mission is to protect aircraft carrier groups, and it does so by simultaneously attacking enemy aircraft, ships, submarines, missiles and torpedoes. Details.
