Abstract

The U.S. Navy tomorrow will commission the USS John S. McCain, the fourth Arleigh Burke class Aegis destroyer built at Bath Iron Works to be commissioned. The ship, launched September 26, 1992, will be stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and is named in honor of the father and grandfather of U.S. senator John S. McCain III, R-Arizona. McCain's grandfather commanded a carrier task force during WWII, while his father was at one time chief of the U.S. Pacific Command. McCain himself is a former Navy flier who spent 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. Details.
