Abstract

Residents of Long Island in 1992 voted 129-44 in favor of seceding from the city of Portland, and on July 1, 1993, incorporated the state's 490th town. Residents yesterday celebrated the event outside Town Hall by raising an American flag that flew over the U.S. Capital in Washington. In the year since independence was proclaimed, property taxes have been reduced from $22.38 per $1,000 valuation to $21.25, as compared to Portland's rate of $24.66 per $1,000. Details.
