Abstract

Portland city manager Robert B. Ganley last year launched a project dubbed "Reinventing Government," named after a best-selling book and designed to improve the way Portland serves city residents. City departments compared themselves to departments in ten other cities, and surveyed businesses and residents to find out how satisfied they are with city services. The result is roughly 2,000 pages of reports, with numerous recommendations for improving the way the city operates. Details, related article.
