Abstract

The new Cumberland County jail is scheduled to open Sunday, pending a final inspection by the state Department of Corrections. The $27.8 million facility, seven months late in opening due primarily to problems with an electronic security system, will begin operating with just 24 prisoners, and will add 24 prisoners weekly until all 180 prisoners from the old jail have been transferred. Thirty-four of the jail's 150 corrections officers have completed training for the new jail. Details.
