Abstract
Clam flats in Freeport between Recompense Cove and John's Point that have been closed to harvesting for five years were opened this week, and the 50 diggers that turned out Wednesday morning raked in 200 bushels of clams worth $15,000 in five hours. The opening of the flats is the biggest achievement to date of the town's efforts in cleaning up the flats and eliminating sources of pollution. Freeport has 27 miles of coastline, and the 63 commercial diggers licensed by the town harvest more than $1 million worth of clams. Details.
