Abstract

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that nearly one in three Maine businesses are operated by women, and women-owned companies in the state employ more than 20,000 Mainers and distribute an annual payroll in excess of $268 million. Women entrepreneurs are getting into areas long dominated by men, with the proportion of women-owned Maine firms operating in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, transportation and the finance/real estate/insurance sectors increasing during the 1980s.
