Abstract

Erwin L. Rupert, 38, who holds a master of divinity degree from Harvard University, asked the city of Portland to excuse the $2,882.36 property tax bill on his condominium at 608 Chandler's Wharf, claiming the condo fits Maine's tax-exemption statute because it is a place of worship. The city refused, and Rupert has asked a Superior Court judge to reverse the city's denial. Rupert registered his church, the New World Church, with the Secretary of State's Office, and its membership is limited to him, his wife and their 2-year-old son. Details.
