Abstract

Representatives of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees yesterday objected to a move by county officials to allow supervisors at the Cumberland County Jail to declare emergencies at the facility and force corrections officers to work mandatory unscheduled overtime. A shortage of guards at the jail prompted the unscheduled overtime, and jail administrator Maj. Wade Sanders said he is trying to speed up the process of hiring 10 new officers. The staffing problem is being blamed on an incident Sunday in which inmates got drunk on home-brewed alcohol and caused some damage at the facility. Details.
