Abstract

Portland police yesterday evacuated and boarded shut an apartment house at 269-271 Brackett Street that has become overrun by cockroaches. The city condemned the building June 22, and a police spokesman said yesterday's action was necessary because the structure was unfit for people to live in. The roaches were migrating to other buildings, and officials say the situation was the worst in 15 years. The landlord, Elliott Silverman of Massachusetts, was unavailable for comment. Details.
