Abstract

Maine potato farmers in the last few weeks have plowed under an estimated 400 to 500 acres of potatoes in an attempt to stop the spread of a late blight that last year devastated their crops. The blight was discovered July 6 in samples from six communities, and appeared on seed infected during last fall's harvest or from exposed potatoes at dump piles that were improperly buried. Farmers this year planted 79,000 acres of potatoes, around two percent fewer than last year.
