Abstract

Concerned Maine Families yesterday announced that it has gathered 67,000 petition signatures, more than enough to force a statewide vote on banning state and local homosexual rights laws. The statewide referendum, which would limit the classifications that might have protection under state or local law, will be held in November 1995 if the secretary of state verifies that at least 52,308 of the signatures are from registered voters. Even if the referendum passes, the state Legislature is free to pass a state law giving protection to homosexuals. Details.
