Abstract

Portland police have charged Elwin L. "Al" Martin, 62, a Portland locksmith and an independent candidate for sheriff of Cumberland County, with operating under the influence of alcohol. After police stopped him for erratic driving on High Street in Portland, near Deering Oaks, on Saturday, he refused to take a Breathalyzer test and presented police with a driver's license to belong to another person. His is currently under suspension. Released on $100 bail, Martin says the episode will not affect his campaign for the sheriff's office.
