Abstract

Representatives of churches, businesses, and civil and gay rights organizations yesterday announced the formation of Maine Won't Discriminate, a coalition that will use legal action and public education to defeat the November 1995 referendum that would preclude gay people from legal protection against discrimination. Concerned Maine Families, the sponsors of the proposed referendum, last week delivered petitions containing 67,000 signatures to the secretary of state for validation. The Maine Council of Churches, the Maine AFL-CIO, and Bath Iron Works are among the groups represented in the coalition. Details.
