Abstract

The Maine State Planning Office and the Island Institute have released a handbook entitled "Exploring Limits: Making Decisions About the Use & Development of Maine's Islands." Maine has 14 islands with fulltime communities, with most experiencing unprecedented numbers of short-time visitors, leading to some concern among planners about envirnmental pressures and the limits of natural resources. The state's coastal registry lists 4,617 islands, and an estimated 1,149 are more than ten acres in size. Details.
