Abstract

The National Park Service on Wednesday held a hearing to gather information on implementation of the federal Maine Acadian Cultural Preservation Act, which was enacted four years ago and calls for the development of partnership programs to interpret and preserve the history of the French-speaking settlers of the Upper St. John Valley and their descendants. Claude Cyr of Madawaska, one of the 11 members of the Maine Acadian Culture Commission, objects to the NPS draft plan definition of a Maine Acadian, claiming the park service was trying to rewrite history in its proposal to implement the act.
