Abstract

The National Research Council yesterday released a report that says bluefin tuna stocks have neither declined nor increased since 1988, which contradicts earlier reports that have led to strict quotas on western Atlantic fishermen and pleas for conservation. Atlantic tuna is managed as two separate stocks, in the eastern and western Atlantic, and the western quota is scheduled to be reduced by 40 percent in 1995 because of a perceived decline in stocks.
