Abstract

The National Park Service has proposed building three Acadian culture centers in the St. John Valley in northern Maine, igniting a controversy over who are the real Acadians and how the nearly $10 million in federal money should be spent. The NPS considers any American of French descent with connections to the St. John Valley to be Acadian, a definition that infuriates some in Madawaska. Claude St. Cyr, a member of the federal Maine Acadian Culture Preservation Commission, says that many of those who claim to be Acadians have their roots in Quebec. Details.
