Abstract
Biddeford police want to close The Stadium Pub, which they describe as an ordinary bar out of control. Bar patrons, however, claim the drive to close the blue-collar drinking establishment, as well as City Square Pub across from City Hall, relates more to the city's efforts sanitize the area in order to get a new district courthouse built on a nearby lot than to anything that transpires at the bar. The police cite as justification statistics that show that 20 drug related arrests have been made in and around the bar since February 20, 1993 and that there have been 17 fights inside the bar and six more in a nearby city parking lot over the past year. A hearing will be held on the pub's future on September 19.
