Abstract

Road crews repaving the quarter-mile-long road leading to the town of Yarmouth's sewage treatment plant are using an asphalt mixture that contains 35 tons of crushed glass instead of the gravel and crushed stone that is normally used. The mixture, called glasphalt, is an efficient way to recycle glass not covered by the state's returnable-bottle law. South Portland experimented with glasphalt two years on a portion of Walnut Street, and the surface has been found to perform as well as the traditional pavement. Details.
