Abstract
The design of the new $27.8 million Cumberland County Jail on Ogdensburg Street in Portland is aimed at reducing tensions by using a modern method of prison management called direct supervision. Under the concept, a single corrections officer stays in a large open space, called a pod, and the officer and up to 48 inmates interact face-to-face. The belief is that officers who become acquainted with the inmates they supervise can control them through communication rather than force. Details.
