Abstract

According to the federal census of 1990, only 20 percent of Maine's population has a college degree, and less than half have any experience at all with higher education. The federally-funded Maine Educational Opportunity Center, with locations in Portland, Orono and Machias, is trying to break the cycle of poverty by promoting education and reaching out to low-income people whose parents didn't graduate from college. The center, which has served around 7,500 people in the three years since it was established, estimates 250,000 Mainers could benefit from its services. Details.
