Abstract
According to the Maine Bureau of Health, there were 27 abortion providers in the state in 1992, as compared to 39 in 1983. Last month, three of the physicians at the Penobscot Bay Women's Health Center in Rockport decided to stop providing abortions, citing fears for the safety of their patients, staff and families. The doctors' decision is the most publicized case in the state, and pro-choice advocates say it highlights the problem of access to services in the state. Ed Gerrish, 56, of Stockton Springs, is a leader of the group of pro-life protesters that demonstrated outside the Rockport clinic, and believes God has called him to fight abortion. Details.
