Abstract

Members of the Maine Board of Pesticides Control on Friday said there is no reason to ban the herbicide Velpar, traces of which have been detected in wells and waterways in several Down East towns. The chemical was first used by Maine's blueberry industry in 1983, and the harvest has nearly tripled since then. A petition drive to ban the use of Velpar was launched after it was discovered in the water sources.
