Abstract

Superior Court justice Bruce W. Chandler on Wednesday ruled that the state must provide the services required under the 1990 Augusta Mental Health Institute consent decree, a decision that is being viewed as a victory for the 3,200 people who have been patients at AMHI since 1988. State Mental Health Commissioner Sue Davenport yesterday said that unless additional funding is provided the ruling could result in resources being taken away from the 5,000 to 8,000 Mainers with mental illnesses who aren't part of the AMHI suit. A spokesman for Gov. McKernan said the governor plans to present a budget that complies with the court order. Details.
