Abstract

Cumberland County sheriff Wesley Ridlon yesterday said that his department did not consider Philip A. Destefano an escape risk because he might have tipped off Cumberland County Jail guards about an escape attempt by four other prisoners. Destefano escaped from the new county jail in Portland last week, and on Monday was captured in upstate New York. Four medium-security inmates were sent to the maximum-security section of the old county jail after guards discovered a fence had been tampered with, but have not been charged with attempted escape due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
