Abstract

There were around 80 milk processors in Portland in 1921, but today there are just four statewide. The number nationwide has decreased from a peak of 9,700 plants in 1940 to 584 in 1990. Flat milk consumption, low profit margins and tough competition have led to the dramatic consolidation. Oakhurst Dairy in Portland and Houlton Farms Dairy are the only remaining independent milk processors in Maine, and the competition means southern Maine will become the market battlefield for Oakhurst, H.P. Hood Inc. of Massachusetts and Garelick Farms of Massachusetts. Details.
