Abstract

Hannaford Bros. Co., owners of the Shop 'n Save supermarket chain, and Shaw's Supermarkets are urging customers to participate in the voluntary "Bring Your Own Bag" program. Hannaford will give customers a 5-cent credit for each fabric bag used while shopping, and will offer customers reduced-price canvas bags. The Lamey Wellehan shoe store chain, Tom's of Maine and the Maine Grocers Association are also participating in the program. The Maine Waste Management Agency estimates that each Maine household uses 260 brown paper bags and 88 plastic bags each year.
