Abstract

Clayton Davis, director of the Maine Department of Agriculture's Division of Regulations, yesterday ordered random sampling of the state's maple syrup. Random sampling of Vermont's maple syrup has resulted in the discovery of alarming levels of lead. Maine, with an annual production of 150,000 gallons, is the second-largest producer of maple syrup in New England, and the third-largest producer in the country.
