Abstract

Maine has 28 health centers in parts of the state the federal government considers underserved, with health practitioners working at those sites eligible to have their school loans forgiven through state and federal programs. Dr. David Tolstrup, 38, was $120,000 in debt when he finished studies at the University of New England, and is now practicing at the St. Croix Regional Family Health Center in Princeton, one of the health centers in need of a physician. Maine is using teleconferencing to help health professionals in the state's remote corners stay current in their fast-changing fields. Details.
