Abstract

Students in Aroostook County play a key role in the potato harvest, started school three weeks early so they can work the harvest during the three weeks between when the potatoes mature and the ground freezes. Many students are unhappy with the tradition, and educators say it's not conducive to the educational environment. The number of potato farmers in Maine has dropped from a peak of 3,000 to the current 650, and the lower number of farmers means there are fewer harvest jobs.
