Abstract

Portland police chief Michael Chitwood yesterday renewed his criticism of the Portland School Department's record on bias incidents, noting that school officials reported just three of the 13 racially motivated incidents logged in the last year. Chitwood said that parents of victims are coming directly to police and the Bias Crimes Task Force instead of school officials, due to a feeling among parents that the schools are culturally insensitive. School superintendent Thomas K. Edward defended the school system, and said its handling of bias incidents is appropriate. Details.
